Homemade Gift Ideas for boys (I think some girls would like them)

I saw this great idea on Phelan's Blog a week or so ago and have been chomping at the bit to make some.    Pictures do not do these pieces justice and I think all the kids we made them for are going to love them.

GS and I found Indians,  cowboys and soldiers at the Dollar General for $1.00 (25 pieces to the bag.)  Bought a can of Aluminum spray enamel for $2.60.  We cut up paper clips and some of the wire ornament hangers to stick into their little heads and it worked fine.

I used some swede leather strips to make the necklace part and I can't remember what the price was for thoseI had some wooden beads from another project and added one before I knotted the leather.

  1. I thought about the cowboys as well. They look great. And yes, sadly the pictures don't show how shinny they are. Great job!

  3. Phelan... I thank you so much for showing the blog world how to make these. I am still going to find my gold plated paint and make me an indian to wear!

  4. Sassy....It sure is fun making these with a grandchild. I am also trying to teach GS you don't have to go buy a ready made gift when you can make something with your own hands.

  5. I think that's awesome Mamma Bear. I'm with ya on teaching the little ones hand crafted techniques, it can open a new world up for them. So many kids these days don't know much how to construct, fix, craft or do simple auto mechanics. It's sad.

I was amazed with my SIL (age 26) when he pulled out a quilt he had made when he was a youngin'. His grandmother taught him and now he has that fond memory and he knows how to use a sewing machine. I had no idea he could, he's a man's man and I'd a never thought he could sew.

He just proved it to me a couple weeks ago when he pulled a discarded coat (at Tractor Supply) where he works, out of the throw aways. It was there because someone inadvertently slashed the back of the coat when opening a new box. He brought it home to his bride knowing he'd fix it and He DID, it looks fine. I was impressed.

SIL has many skills & my daughter is crafty, so between us all our grandchild and future ones will have fun learning different skills.

Keep up the good work with your family. Blessings!
