Blocking Followers

I blocked two followers this week who joined my blog.

The first blog I clicked on was in a foreign language and had a translate button.  I translated it to English and the best I could tell in one post is they were writing about parrots.  When I clicked on older post it kept scrolling and scrolling until I was way back into the beginning of last year.  I have never seen a blog do this before.

Today I again had a new follower...I clicked on the blog to find out about them.  Another foreign language.  This time I did not even try to translate to English.  When I went back to my reading list I had a little box that followed me on every page that read "download this video"  I don't know if anyone reading my blog could see this or not or if it was only on my dashboard.

As soon as I blocked these new followers and restarted blogger, the download video box went away.  I was actually worried that my blogger account had been hacked but could not imagine why.  I guess this is a new method of SPAM.

Have you had this happen to you?

  1. Good luck, hope you have not been hacked, that kinda takes the fun and friendship out of blogging.

    1. TL...I was hoping the same thing but then I thought who in the world would want to hack a blog that talks of family, critters, cooking and gardening!

  2. Please give me a name on the bloggers blocked. I had a new follower this evening and his blog is located in Spain, I think.

    2. I have the same new follower as Stephen. However, he has been on blogger since 2008. If they are up to something I am guessing it is more as a subtle way to draw traffic to their websites. They are pay sites, and page count may help their traffic numbers.

  3. Mamma Bear,

I've had continous anonymous people making comments. This prompted me to require all comments be sent to a moderation page for approval before displaying. The anonymous people seem to always make comments on my olders posts. Daily, I have about 8 to 10 anonymous posts.

    1. Sandy...I only had 2 "real" people who occasionally posted under anonymous. I hated to do it but I was getting about 20 anonymous spam posts a day so I just don't allow anonymous comments any longer...problem solved.

  4. I've never heard of this so I'm afraid I am of no help. I think when I first started blogging someone from another country followed me but their blog was what looked like a nice and legit blog. I didn't follow back because I didn't know how to translate things back then but I still probably wouldn't do it today. I haven't gotten any anonymous comments either.

    1. This was a first for me Angela. I don't allow anonymous comments any longer so I guess the spammers are looking for another way in now.

  5. I've never figured out how to block followers, but I guess I should learn. I moderate comments and don't post any with links, unless they're from someone that I know. I finally opted out of allowing anonymous comments and that seemed to solve the last of my spam problems (until I get hacked).

    1. GS if you click on the followers on your dashboard and then click on their name there is an option to block follower . This solved my problem of the pop up I was getting to download a v
video. I think since I have blocked anonymous comments that the spammers are looking for a new way in to the blogs. I really don't want to moderate unless I have to.

  6. yes, a constant check on the stats page to check comments and to delete some that made it though the spam bots. On the up side, it gives me reason to check my blog, and of course, look at other blogs.

  7. K...since I blocked anonymous comments I have not gotten any spam. I use my stats too to check for comments as I don't check my email that often. I love comments. Ninety percent of the time peoples comments are more interesting than my blog post!
