School Lunches

Grandson called last night.

Grandma...Can you come to Thanksgiving lunch at my school  tomorrow.  Mom can't come cause she is the only nurse at the office tomorrow. My sister has a test and can't come and if I bring Gizzy (the dog) he'll just jump on the table and eat all the food.  So will you come Grandma?....Please?

How could I resist.  After all I am 4th choice after the dog. I made Papa Bear go too.  The Marine stayed home with my niece....He doesn't need all those schoolhouse germs.

Papa Bear and I met grandson at 10:45 (way to early for lunch) paid our $5.00 a plate.  I would have gladly paid $10.00 for someone to eat it for me.  Papa Bear and I did attempt to eat a bite or two of each item that was on our plates to try and encourage grandson to eat.

Turkey, ham, stuffing, mashed potatoes & gravy, green beans and apple crisp.

Not one thing was decent to eat.  I watched all the kids at our table.  They nibbled like Papa Bear and I.  They drank their non fat chocolate milk.

Then they dumped their tray of food in the garbage just like we did.

Thank you Michele Obama for the starving kids at school.  No fats, no salts, no taste....Let's Move....straight to the garbage can.

I told Grandson the next time we came to school for lunch we'd bring it.  I noticed that was what a few parents did.

They were smart.

  1. Better to have pizza in their bellies than turkey in the trash.

  2. The lack of calories keeps the little boys weaker for their indoctrination sessions.

    1. You are probably right PP...if there were a private school nearby I would gladly pay for grandson to attend.

  3. Yep, I'll occasionally spend my allowance and bring Row some McDonalds or Chik-fil-a when I can sneak away from school work.

I'm sure your Grandson will remember when Mama and Papa bear had lunch with him at school. FYI - We always send a sack lunch with our son. He doesn't need to be indoctrinated. maybe that will be another post one day.

  4. Maybe Michele should make it mandatory that food stamps be used for healthy food. I've stood behind a lot of food stamp customers loading cokes and twinkies on the conveyor belt.

Have you SEEN the price of twinkies?

    1. Doesn't that just burn you up LJ? A pregnant former neighbor was bragging about using her food-stamps to purchase lobster she was craving for her family.

Haven't checked the price of twinkies but I imagine a lot of those get paid with stamps as well.

my goodness. it was THAT bad? oh my goodness.

lots of love to you and yours always (even when i'm teasin' wit ya!), your friend,

  6. School lunches are GROSS says my 12 year old boys. They take a packed lunch everyday. This week they took salsibury steak (venison) and home canned green beans, chocolate zucchini bread and water. They alway take leftovers from dinner the night before. Today was pizza and pasta salad, cookies, canned peaches and water. When ever I go to there school other kids say MRS...... can you pack my lunch for me or can send extras with the boys!!!( I do send extra snacks/fruit) I have even had teachers email me about the boys lunch. I have always packed there lunch like this and they still get of the bus and say I'm starving even before I get a Hello!!!!!! Amber

    1. Amber...My 7 year old grandson tells me the school can mess up a can of corn. I guess the only thing good he gets now is his snack his Mom packs for his after school care.

Your boys are very blessed to have you take the time to pack them a good lunch.

  7. I can vouch for the Thanksgiving lunches. Our school had EXACTLY the same thing! and on the same day. Must have been Statewide Thanksgiving Lunch day in the school system. Senior and I unfortuantly had to miss this years spectacle. we had work to do. Darn the luck!
But I remember last year all to well...kids were not eating. Heck I hardly ate. blah!

I pack lunches most every day. the only day they like to buy is on "Corn dog" day. lol

    1. Glock Mom...as I told Amber (above) Children are very blessed to have a parent who takes the time to see their kids have a good lunch instead of those forced on them by the school system.

You and Senior didn't miss a thing food wise. It was actually sad to see all those plates of food being dumped in the garbage.

  8. I worked in the cafeteria in a public school at one time. Then, they probably cooked 2/3 of the meals from scratch, including homemade cookies and desserts. Over the course of 2 years they school had gone to probably 90% processed foods because they were told by the government nutritionists that "that is what the kids want to eat." I noticed an eventual decline in the number of student lunches sold and more cold lunches being brought to school. So then, the cafeteria monitors walked around and "encouraged" the students to eat the main part of their lunch before eating the cookies or dessert that had been packed for them. It is ridiculous and frightening the amount of government control in the are of our lives that involves what we consume. GMO's, aspartame, soy, chemical additives, lower nutrition, fewer calories (maybe), and lower IQ's.

    1. Rose... I remember growing up and looking forward to the school lunches that were prepared from scratch. When we got to school you could smell the homemade yeast rolls the cafeteria women baked each day. My Mom cooked biscuits and cornbread so I looked forward to those warm soft rolls. The smells that drifted through schools were a wonderful thing years ago.

  9. It's sad that kids have to eat garbage because of someone's political agenda. I loved school food (most of it) when I was growing up. My kids come home starving every day. Sad.

    1. I liked most of the lunches growing up too. My kids didn't complain of the school lunches. The grandchildren are a different matter. It is very sad.
