Bebe must go

I caught her with a chicken this morning.

She had dug into the side of the chicken tractor.  A few escaped from the hole and were running loose.  She grabbed one and killed it.  I am waiting on animal control to come pick her up.   My heart is heavy and I have a serious lump in my throat.  I really wanted her to be a part of our family but we can't have an animal here who kills our livestock.  I have found dug out places where she has tried to dig under the gate where I have an injured baby goat but was not really concerned.  I guess I should have been.  It could have just as easily been a baby goat than a chicken.

  1. Have had a couple of my own do that too, it's why I'm down to 5 chickens now and that dog is gone. Do what you gotta do and don't sweat it. We dont farm to feed the dogs.

  2. Some dogs just do not get it when they are told no! Hounds are not the brightest or easiest dogs to train. Sorry it did not work out.

    1. The only thing I had to tell her no about was a pen I had an injured baby goat. She wanted to make him run. She had never even looked twice at the chickens.

  3. If you'll take that dead chicken and tie it around the dogs neck for about two weeks, where it can't get it off... IT WILL BREAK THE DOG.

When I was a small boy, my dad used this to break an otherwise good dog from a bad habit.

    2. Matt. I seriously doubt that would work as any dog regardless of his pedigree loves to roll in any stinky stuff they find. I sure wouldn't torture a dog or us by tying a dead chicken around a dogs neck in this 90 plus degree heat. Can you imagine the flies and maggots not to mention the stench.

Maybe your dad's dog just decided he didn't like chickens.

  4. Any dog that killed one of my chickens would have to go!

    1. Thanks Pp. I was not that upset over one chicken but once they start , they usually won't stop and what next? Baby goats don't weigh much more than a full grown chicken and with that I would have been very upset.

  5. I'm horrified that anonymous left that comment. No wonder they chose not to come out with a name. Some dad's just had no insight into what they were doing or why. Dogs are not offended by the reek of a dead animal, so I'm glad their hound straightened up.

I really loved BeBe. Part bloodhound, part hound, and the hound won.

Sorry. But you can't have the goat get killed next.

    1. I loved Bebe too. I really really wanted her to be a part of our family. A real nice young lady from animal control came out and said there would be no problem adopting her out. I told her Bebe could go with any family with kids and cats. Bebe loved them all. Just don't put her with anyone with livestock.
