Can I keep her?

I have seen this pretty girl about a mile or 2 from our house several times and not close to any farms.  The first time I saw her I thought to myself if she's still there when I come back home I would pick her up but I forgot to look for her.  Papa Bear mentioned seeing her a couple of times when he's left to run errands.

Today my Mom came running up the back steps yelling there was a big dog outside slobbering.  Mom had went down to the chicken pen to throw scraps over the fence and when she started back to the house, the girl had caught sight of her and took off running towards her slinging slobber as she ran.   Mom said all she could think of seeing a slobbering dog was the movie "Cujo" and she found out she could still run!  Poor Mom...she is going to be so sore tomorrow.

She has a collar but no tags to ID her.  I've posted her picture on Craigs List to try to find her owner.  If she's not claimed I'm going to keep her.

I've always wanted a hound to lay around on the porch.  Maybe her finding us was a sign that I was suppose to have her.  We've been all over the barnyard and she didn't make a motion to chase anyone, not even the cats.   Papa Bear said she may be a victim of Obamanomics.  The Animal Shelters have even picked up some horses running loose on a nearby road that were never claimed.

  1. Mamma - you have done everything that is recquired of you and if no one contacts you about the little lady - then yes - KEEP HER! because you will provide her with a good and wonderful home and she came to you because she wants a good and wonderful family. she is already yours. if she belonged to someone else - she would go and try to find them.

people from the suburbs drop off cats and dogs out here "in the country" where we live....it makes me so angry. our most recent rescue cat, Franklin (Frank Sinatra, Frankie Blue Eyes) was dropped here as a kitten, somehow managed to fend for, and feed himself but now he has a home. thank goodness.

that is a gorgeous, beautiful, delightful girl that found you. she is yours because you are hers. i am so happy for the both of you. what is her name?

much love, Mamma, being sent to you and all of yours, always. thank you for taking her in...she needs you. your friend,

  2. kymber...I love your Frankie and glad he got a forever home with you and jambaloney! I think animals who find you make much better pets (family members). Bébé is still lying on the porch guarding the door. How do you like that name?!

Much love to you and yours!

    1. oooh-la-la - i didn't realize that she was French Canadian!!! i love her name, it is grand and very fitting for such a beautiful lady. i completely agree with Tombstone Livestock below...take her off of Craig's list.

you all are now hers Mamma. i am so very happy for all of you. let us know what The Marine thinks of her!

      your friend,

    2. kymber...I have a bad habit of calling all of our animals baby and found myself doing the same with her. I thought I needed to alter the name slightly so she would know the difference if she is not claimed.

I invited her in to meet The Marine but she would not come past the doorway. Apparently she has never been an inside dog. I printed a picture of her for the Marine. He held it and smiled. If it ever stops raining and mosquitoes are not out in droves, I will take him outside to meet her. She is really sweet and gentle.

    3. p.s. You live in Florida? Our Bichon was 17 and blind. It was the beginning of my worse depression when we put him to sleep. We didn't start healing until a puppy mill was shut down and we rescued a 4 year old Maltese who desperately needed us. We live in Hernando.

    4. lotta joy...We rescued our Bichon Charlie when he was 3 years old. We had heard they made a great companion for the handicap so we got him for The Marine. We flew him from Indiana to us. He had been crated for his entire life. He so much enjoyed his freedom the 14 1/2 years he was with us. I still miss him and my eyes are still pulled to any small white dog I see, always looking for Charlie. I seriously doubt he is still alive. He would be almost 20 now.

We live in NW Florida about 25 miles outside of Panama City.

    1. We now have 4 dogs, 2 cats, 21 goats, over 50 chickens, 2 beehives and I think 19 turkeys. That's a whole lot of love!...OK...the chickens and turkeys don't try to love up on us!....LOL

  4. I would take the listing off of Craig's List, if her owners cared for her they would put up signs and be out looking for her. You tried your best, but she came to you and since you and Papa Bear had both seen her out on the road she is lucky she did not get hit. Enjoy your new pet, hounds can be fun. In the past we've had 3 Beagles, a Basset Hound and a Walker/Blue Tick cross. Just hide your phone, Walker/Blue Tick chewed mine up and put it under the sofa cusions.

    1. TL... I won't bump the listing up but will leave it on there a couple of days. I did check Craig's Lost and Found all the way back to July and did not find anyone looking for her.

I have not contained her so she has every opportunity to leave if she so desired. I have not been to the post office in a couple of weeks. I'll check it tomorrow. There is a community bulletin board in there that people would post a picture and info for a missing animal.

Too funny about the phone. I swear my daughter has to buy a cell phone charger every other week. It is her dogs favorite snack!

  5. Glad she adopted you. I agree with Kymber and Tombstone if she had a loving home she would be going there and if she was lost by mishap the original owners would be broadcasting hi and low.

Do you want a loveable lab cross as well? He showed up here last summer and hasn't left yet :)

    1. PP - you love that lab and you know it! he's yer boy! and there's nothing to be done when a pet chooses you...even if it's a varmint - bahahahahahah!

    2. PP...If she was mine I would have looked hi and lo for her. When our Bichon went missing 4 years ago , I did everything possible to find him. He was almost 16 years old and had health issues you would not have known about unless you took him to a vet. I can only hope whoever took him gave him a good home.

If you ever make it to Florida, you can bring that sweet lab by...the more the merrier as long as I can afford the dog food, rabies and parvo shots, flea collars, heart guard...etc, etc...LOL! Is that lab mix the one someone chained in your yard?

  6. Our dog was running down the street on the Fourth of July,we put an ad in the paper...we did have one Korean lady call, but guessed the sex wrong. ( Honestly ) Anyways, 8 years later, and he has been a great asset to our family. Great with the boys, and barks at foreign sounds. Indy ( short for Independence Day ) is a great rescue mutt...part Rottweiler and Lab is our guess. Just my two cents, keep him, but then again I don't have to feed him either.

    1. I love the name Indy and how appropriate! We were once in Rock Springs Wyoming at a hotel. I had the door open looking at the snow falling when a big black cat brushed past my leg and made himself at home in our room. We were there for a couple of weeks and I could not find his owner. He became a Florida cat!

Bébé threw that Bloodhound nose in the air today, took a sniff and let out that rolling bark. I loved it. I don't know about hounds so I don't know if they are protective over their property or not but I hope so. If I heard a bark like hers I would be very afraid to prowl around here in the dark!

    2. I forgot to write we at at the Cody Motel so we named the big black cat Cody.

  8. Thank you Holly...I think it was meant to be! I checked all down the main road for any signs posted of her missing. I stopped at the post office and checked the bulletin board and didn't find a thing. Papa Bear had to hold her when I left to go to the post office. She wanted to follow me down the road

She spent the night on the porch and could have left if she wanted too but she was right out front when I went out this morning with my coffee. I have not received any responses from Craigs List. I bought her a pretty pink collar from Tractor Supply when I went to get the girls some Alfalfa. Everyone got flea and tick treatments today. She's been here over 30 hours now. I'll wait a few more days and then get her vet checked for heart worms. I give all of the other shots and medications myself.

    1. chipmunk..., I know those eyes are made that way but they look so sad. I can tell she's happy when she's wagging that long, 10 pound tail of hers! Thanks for stopping by!

  10. All of our many animals, mostly dogs, have found us over the years. It was meant to be if they show up & mind you while becoming part of the family. We only had to turn 1 red chow away as he was a bit aggressive. All the beagles, labs, black chow & other mutts became our friends. And, we have never purchased a friend, they just accepted us & we accepted them. Best pets on earth.

    1. DRW...I agree...our best pets have been the ones who found us. So far Bébé is the calmest, quietest critter on the farm!

  11. Allow her/him to stay with you and know peace, love, and safety.

IF anyone would claim her, just a heads up: lately lost dogs are being "found" and used for training pitbulls.

This is a precious life that has managed to stay alive. The reward is for both of you.

  12. lotta joy...she has been with us for 3 days now. I think if she had a loving home to go to she would have already left us. Each morning when I raise the blinds in The Marine's room I see her lying on the porch and breath a sigh of relief. I am hoping she is here to stay. We already love her.

    1. I forgot to ad that although she is solid red, she does have an identifying mark on her that only her owner would know. I did post this fact in the lost and found I posted on Craig's list...maybe that is why I have had no responses to my ad eh?

    2. She was probably standing vigil in the place where she was dropped off, waiting for her loved ones to return.

Joe and I have, so far, given chase to two dogs, frightened out of their minds, after they were dropped on a busy highway. Although our intentions were good, and I was carrying a sack of dog food, all these two wanted was their home back.

I pity the fool who ever does this in my presence.

  13. Aww she is beautiful. Looks like a bloodhound baby. I would love a bloodhound. Papa bear is probably right, she could indeed be a victim of the bad economy and left to fend on her own.

    1. She looks to be full blooded and maybe has had a litter of puppies in the past. I have looked closely at her stomach and can't find a scar that she has been spayed so if she is not claimed that will be her first vets visit with a checkup. We have 2 male dogs that we've never neutered , one is with the livestock and the other is on a dog run by Mom's so neither is able to populate the world with unwanted babies.

I am afraid that maybe she was at one point stolen and then turned loose in our area. I don't think anyone would have had trouble finding her a home if they had only posted an ad. I am kind of afraid of a vet visit, she may be micro-chipped but it must be done. I would be very sad but would get her back to her rightful owners. I am guessing she is around 2 years old.
